Weekly Update as of 8-31-07

Crossway Farms Weekly Update

Fall is coming quickly, but summer is having a hard time letting go. Nearly all our pumpkins have turned orange, so we have been trying to keep the plants alive to shade the pumpkins from this hot sunny weather. We have a good crop of pumpkins and other fall decorations that we will be harvesting in the next few weeks as we get ready for the weekend of September 16th.

We are opening the U-pick red raspberry patch on Labor Day, September 3, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It will be first come, first serve, as this is the start of the season and there will only be so many berries ready. The raspberry patch will be open until we have a hard frost. We will have some pre-picked raspberries from our other patch available.

The peppers love the heat and are doing well. We have many different varieties of bell and hot peppers you can use for salsa and many other dishes. We still won’t have many heirloom tomatoes, and our regular tomato numbers are dropping in production now.

Cucumbers are still producing well as are the black eyed peas and okra. We should have green beans in a few weeks, as well as a few head of cabbage this week and much more to come in the following weeks. The zucchini and squash are dying off quickly and we won’t have much of them throughout the rest of the season. We are no longer selling Fulton’s sweet corn unless it is for a large order (5 doz +).

The sunflowers are finished for the year, but we should have cosmos and zinnias for a while longer.

Please note! We now have our fall hours: Mon. — Wed. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; closed Thurs.; Fri. and Sat. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Starting September 16th we will be open on Sundays 1-5 for our pumpkin patch. We appreciate your flexibility, and, as always, look forward to serving you as we enter these busy fall months.

Baked Goods for downtown Saturday: Hershey Kiss Cookies, Pennsylvania Dutch Coffee Cakes, and homemade jams.
Have a great weekend!

Weekly update as of August 9th

Hello! Hope you all have managed the heat this week. Everything has been pretty consistent around here, especially the temperatures and the need for constant irrigation. Our irrigation has been running all summer nearly 24/7, but has been keeping up with demand. Our new strawberry plants have taken off well and are actually trying to flower. We still have some more strawberries to plant in the next two weeks and it would be nice to have some more moderate temps.

We have an abundant supply of heirloom and hybrid tomatoes and have canning tomatoes as well. Call us for availability and prices. Our peppers are thriving in the heat and we have plenty of colors for your selection.

Fresh vegetables abound: squash, zucchini, cucumbers, black eyed peas, and okra are the most abundant right now. Our green beans are slowing down a bit now, but we will have more in a month or so. Our sunflowers, zinnias, and cosmos are in full production and we have many different colors and sizes. The gladiolas are finished for the year.

The heat has been tough on our red raspberries, but we do have a few pints each day. The U-pick will not be open until later in August.

We are still selling Fulton’s sweet corn at both markets and should have it to offer until mid September.

Angie and Debbie will have their baked goods at the downtown Farmer’s Market on Saturday, but this will be the last weekend for Debbie’s baked goods until the Applefest. The Shelby County Applefest takes place in downtown Sidney this year on September 7-9, and includes entertainment, a craft show, and a quilt show along with the Farmer’s Market and much more.
Baked Goods: No-Bake Cookies, Peanut Butter Fudge, White Chocolate Fudge, Chocolate Fudge, Rice Krispy Treats, Lemon Bars, Frosted Cut-out Cookies, Oatmeal Cookies, Mini-Carrot Cakes with Cream Cheese Frosting, Hershey Kiss Cookies, Pennsylvania Dutch Coffee Cakes, Buckeyes, and Homemade Jams.

Have a great weekend!

Weekly Update as of August 3

Crossway Farms Weekly Update

Another week has gone by and brought us a new month and new weather. It’s a good thing tomatoes and peppers like it hot, because that’s what we’ve got. The heat of August means the garden is in full swing.

Whether you want the heirloom or hybrid tomatoes, we have plenty for you to choose from. Those of you who are heating up your kitchens this month can come in and get some canning tomatoes at discounted prices. Our pepper selection is diverse this year. We have some beautiful and unique colored bell peppers such as lilac, yellow, chocolate, and of course green. We also have some hot peppers: hot banana, garden salsa, jalapeno, and cayene.

The cucumbers are in full production and we have plenty of yellow squash and zucchini for making bread or stir fry. This will be the last week for red cabbage, but we will have more green cabbage in about a month’s time. We still have a good supply of green beans and should have for another week or so. Our flowers are all in full bloom except the gladiolas which are about done for the year.

If you’re looking for something new this week, we’ve got black-eyed peas and okra ready for you.

We are starting to pick some fall red raspberries (it is a little early), and our u-pick will be opening soon. We still have Fulton’s sweet corn for sale at the market and downtown on Saturday’s.

Our Cisco Rd. location will be closed on Saturday August 4th, but we will be at the Farmers Market that morning.

Angie and Debbie will have their baked goods at the downtown Farmer’s Market (Saturday morning from 8 a.m. to noon) and I have listed the items below.
Baked Goods: No Bake Cookies, Peanut Butter Fudge, White Chocolate Fudge, Chocolate Fudge, Rice Krispy Treats, Lemon Bars, Frosted Cut-out Cookies, Oatmeal Cookies, Mini-Carrot Cakes with Cream Cheese Frosting, Hershey Kiss Cookies, Pennsylvania Dutch Coffee Cakes, Buckeyes, and Homemade Jams.

Have a great weekend!
